Like Max Headroom….

Filed under: My Word... — bbluesman @ 4:43 pm

Had an e-mail from a friend commenting on recent FreeCulture News interviews I’ve been doing. He mentioned that Skype sound quality reminded him a little of Max Headroom with the occasional digitized blip and distortion. Slight technical defects aside, what a truly great tool. For the additional cost of zero I can talk to people all over the world enabling me to interview people virtually where ever I want at no additional cost. Uplifting!

  1. heh. yeah, your friend nailed it. It actually enhances some folks like Evo. On the other hand, running a Scotsman through it leads to much pressing of the skip back button for this listener.
If the blips are due to data being delayed and Skype catching up, we should be able to get clear saved audio if Skype would save the stream itself. Then when it was played back, there wouldn’t be timebase errors. Skype should also keep the incomming and outgoing streams separate (e.g. L and R channel) so that eq and normalization could be done on them separately.

  2. Hmm. PowerGramo Pro does all the stuff I mentioned for $20. The free version does everything but the dual track. Windows only though.

PamelaPro looks very nice for recording for podcasting but I didn’t see anything that said it would do dual channel. It does let you adjust the record volume for local and remote separately. Sent them a question via email about dual channel. $21.50/30 day free trial. Windows only.

I guess I’ll have to test drive these to see if the blipping is reduced or eliminated.

  5. Quick update: A new version of PamelaPro should be out this week with dual channel. I’m trying to get my hands on an advance copy to review.

I tried PowerGrammo. The recorded audio of the nice Skype test call lady sounded like she was down a well. I tried to call Mark and got an error from Skype. This is the same thing that happened another time when I was trying to record the soundcard output. It takes a lot of CPU to run Skype and record it. Mark told me he reboots and shuts down everything he can before he records an interview with Skype. I’m not ready to write off PowerGrammo just yet. I’ve spent zero time working on getting a good recording with it.
